Haley Pest Control of Lawrence Can Help Rid Your Home of Tarantulas

Tarantulas are Kansas's largest spiders. They have a body length of up to 2 and a quarter inches. They are usually active at night when they hunt insects for food. The males are often seen crossing roads at night in the fall when they wander in search of a mate. Tarantulas are native to southern and western Kansas although they have been sited by our technicians in Eudora and in Lecompton in the last year.

Tarantulas can live in rainforests and deserts. Their prey is insects, and even rodents and small birds. Tarantulas are very hairy with sharp bristles. The hairs are easily shed or can be rubbed off. Handling a tarantula can result in irritation to the skin. If hands are not washed after handling a tarantula and eyes are touched, the sharp hairs can cause eye irritation that may require a trip to the physician.

Tarantulas are sensitive to vibrations and hunt at night by touch. If cornered, the tarantula will make a purring sound and may rear up on its back legs. Even though tarantulas are scary looking to most people, most bites do not produce any significant poisoning symptoms. However, the bites can be quite painful because of the large size of the spider. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling a tarantula.
